About Jurassic Period
Extending from approximately 145 million to 200 million years ago,
the Jurassic Period marks the middle period of the Mesozoic Era - the
grand Age of the Dinosaurs.
Jurassic-age
dinosaur remains are extremely rare, and found within the Morrison
Formation in western U.S. states such as Wyoming, Colorado, Utah,
Montana, and South Dakota.
Bones and teeth
from this Period are seldom available for private purchase for a number
of reasons:
Limited Private Land
Most of
the dinosaur-bearing Morrison Formation is found on Federal or Bureau of
Land Management (BLM) property. It is illegal to collect vertebrate
remains on Federal land unless you are affiliated with an accredited
museum or institution where public study is available. That leaves very
little private land available to individuals or commercial collectors
for the excavation of Jurassic-age bones and teeth.
Excavation--Difficult
and Expensive
Excavating Jurassic-age dinosaur bones is often much more difficult than
with the more common Cretaceous-age dinosaur remains. The deep,
bone-bearing layers of the Morrison Formation consist of hard,
dig-resistant rock.
Excavation
requires lots of time and hard work, and often the use of heavy
machinery. There is also little “surface collecting” available, which is
common to Cretaceous Period dinosaurs. View our inventory of
dinosaur bones and teeth, prepped and ready for sale.
Time-Consuming
Preparation
Unless
found relatively near the surface (which is rare) and in good shape
(common to Cretaceous bones but not to Jurassic bones), Jurassic-age
bones and teeth demand many hours for the removal of the hard, durable
matrix or rock encasing them. While this preparation time can increase
the cost of the prepared bones, Paleo Gallery endeavors not to pass on
this expense to bones that are sold.
